چکیده

In this paper, a neutral file format—STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product model data) is used to transfer geometrical data from CAD tools to assembly analysis tools. JSDAI (Standard Data Access Interface for STEP binding to JAVA) is used to read geometrical data from the CAD STEP files. After all necessary geometrical data is extracted from the CAD STEP files, the interference relationships between parts are analyzed. The methods developed for using JSDAI to extract geometrical data from CAD STEP files and for determining interference relationships between parts in the assemblies are introduced. @DOI: 10.1115/1.1861473#

Automatic Generation of Assembly Instructions Using STEP

∗ S. Mok and K. Ong are currently Ph.D. and M.S. students of ECE at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. Abstract An automatic method for generating assembly instructions using CAD files is presented in this paper. Algorithms for extracting geometrical information of objects stored in a non-proprietary format, ISO-10303, STEP-CAD data file are explained. The developed algorithms form an impor...

CAD model-based planning and vision guidance for optical 3D co- ordinate measurement

Controlling the geometric accuracy of manufactured products is seen as an important issue, since it affects both production costs and quality. Optical measurement technology has been found suitable for various geometric control applications, and laser rangefinder devices in particular are now being used to measure large objects and structures. This thesis describes the development of a concept ...

Reorganizing CAD Assembly Models (as-Designed) for Manufacturing Simulations and Planning (as-Built)

A CAD assembly model is a collection of components, comprised recursively of various levels of individual parts and sub-assembly models. Although the overall geometry in the CAD assembly model accurately represents the final finished product, this model is often meaningless from a manufacturing planning and simulation point of view. The grouping of the components into sub-assemblies and the ass...

A Feature-based Approach for Integrated Product Design and Process Planning

Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) is considered to be the bridge that links Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM). One of the imperative characteristics of CAPP is Automatic Feature Recognition (AFR). CAD files contain detailed geometric information of a part, which are not suitable for using in the downstream applications such as process planning. Different CA...

Flexible and P 50 . Flexible and Precision Assembly

Flexible assembly refers to an assembly system that can build multiple similar products with little or no reconfiguration of the assembly system. It can serve as a case study for some of the emerging applications in flexible automation. A truly flexible assembly system should include flexible part feeding, grasping, and fixturing as well as a variety of mating and fastening processes that can b...
